FROST Art Museum @ FIU

THE FROST ART MUSEUM FIU is one of the largest free-standing art museums in Florida, the Patricia & Phillip Frost
Art Museum at Florida International University was founded in 1977 and is the Smithsonian Affiliate in Miami.

The museum’s new lakeside building debuted in 2008, designed by Yann Weymouth (the chief of design on the I.M.
Pei Grand Louvre Project). The museum’s mission is three-fold: to be a campus resource for the entire FIU
community; to offer interdisciplinary training in the arts for the next generation of artists and art historians; and to serve
as a premier cultural destination for the residents of Miami, and the 15 million visitors to one of the world’s most
vibrant cultural destinations - home to global cultural events including Art Basel.

Admission to the museum is always free, the museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Art after Stonewall, 1969—1989
On View: Saturday, September 14, 2019 — Sunday, January 5, 2020

Organized By: Columbus Museum of Art
Exhibition Opening | Saturday, September 14 from 4-7pm  Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall
Riots of 1969, this groundbreaking survey features more than 200 works of art and related visual materials that
explore the profound impact of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) liberation movement on visual
culture. The exhibition focuses on both the work of openly LGBTQ artists as well as the practices of artists engaged
with newly emerging queer subcultures.  Art after Stonewall highlights a wide array of performance, film, and video art,
as well as photography, painting, sculpture, music, along with historical documents and images taken from
magazines, newspapers, and television. This exhibition is organized by the Columbus Museum of Art.

This exhibition has been possible at the Frost Art Museum FIU by Bank of America.
Additional support has been generously provided by Our Fund, an LGBT Community Foundation and the Art after

ABOUT NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President
Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to
cover the 30-day period from September 15 through October 15. The day of
September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for
Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and
Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days
on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. Además, México y Chile celebran su independencia
el 16 y 18 de Septiembre, respectivamente.

If you ask “who is the ONE volunteer that has
consistently shown up to every single LGBT
community event in Miami over the years,” I’m
sure everyone in the room would know exactly
who I was speaking about.

Her love for the community and her passion to
help others is the reason we all love her.
An American businesswoman, actress, and
transgender rights advocate,  founder and CEO
of TransTech Social Enterprises.

She is  Candy Abundance in FX’s POSE, and in
her latest role as Nurse Rita on American Horror
Story 1984, she becomes the first-ever trans
woman to star on two network television shows,
inspiring generations to come to be strong,
confident, determined, and focused on their
dreams.
